When relatives bring their kids over, finding a Meta Quest game that is actually safe and fun to hand over can be a nightmare. Cook-Out: Sandwich Legend is the perfect solution—it’s essentially “Overcooked VR.” This zero-violence, chaotic cooking sim lets up to four players (or solo with a robot sidekick) juggle frantic sandwich orders in a whimsical fairytale forest. With intuitive controls and a hilariously hectic pace, it’s one of the few VR titles that is as much fun to watch as it is to play. Here is my full review on why this should be your go-to pick for family gatherings and kid-friendly VR sessions.

Game Introduction

Whenever my relatives’ kids come over, the first thing they fight over is my Meta Quest.

But once I open the library, what shows up? Fighting games, sports, bank robberies with guns, and even stuff like DeoVR that’s clearly not for kids. With adults watching nearby, there are barely any titles I can safely hand over. Even the ones I do let them try don’t really get much excitement. At this point, it’s just pretending to be a cat crawling around or shooting birds with a slingshot. They’ve probably gotten bored of that already.

Everyone runs into this problem, right? What do you even let kids play in VR?

So I decided to turn it into a series. A kids edition, a girls-friendly edition, maybe even a relaxing picks for adults edition. The Meta Quest VR puzzle game Sandwich Legend: Cook-Out that I’m talking about this time is planned as the third entry in the kids series.

The characters in this game are ridiculously cute. You can play as a dog, a cat, even a squirrel, and dress them up in your own custom chef outfits. The only downside is that if you’re not playing online multiplayer, you don’t really get to see your own appearance.

There’s zero violence, and it’s not hard. You play as an animal chef serving food to different animal customers, and you even get help from a robot assistant.

The story begins in an animal kingdom.

From there, you can choose between two modes. You can play solo at your own pace, or jump into multiplayer and cooperate with others to make sandwiches together. Playing alone is fine, but when everyone splits up the tasks and rushes to finish orders together, it really feels like a real kitchen.

You can choose your character and costume, with several different animal styles available.

That means you get to play as your favorite animal chef.

The queen of the animal kingdom is looking for chefs.

But before you can serve Her Majesty, you’ll need to master the art of making sandwiches.

Before you can serve the queen, you’ll need to travel through the different streets of the village and keep the animals well-fed and happy.

You’ve got a robot assistant who helps with part of the cooking.

But once its battery runs out, you’ll have to recharge it yourself.

The controls are super simple, basically just two buttons:

  • Grip button: Grab ingredients
  • Trigger button: Squeeze ketchup or mustard

You cook according to what the animals request. First, open the fridge and take out bread, ham, and other ingredients.

Slice them quickly with the knife, add a bit of ketchup or mustard, then plate it up and serve. If you get it right, they happily leave some money. If you mess up, they’ll smash the plate and storm off.

The fridge is stocked with ingredients like bread and tomatoes. Just place them on the cutting board and you can slice them right away.

Ingredients taken from the fridge are placed on the cutting board and sliced, while the required sandwich combinations appear on screen in a fast-paced cooking challenge.

The seasoning station has ketchup, mustard, and pepper, which you need to squeeze onto the sandwiches.

It looks simple at first, but there are a lot of customers, and some of them are a real pain.

The impatient rabbit will smash the plate and storm off if you make it wait too long. The gluttonous wolf keeps demanding more toppings the longer you take to serve the food. And the robot assistant is constantly running out of battery. You end up slicing vegetables with one hand while cranking the charger with the other just to wake it back up.

With so many customers coming in at once, you’re completely overwhelmed while playing. But for anyone watching, that chaos is exactly what makes it hilarious.

The werewolf is surprisingly patient, but he’s incredibly greedy. If you leave him alone, he’ll just keep piling on extra toppings by himself.

In the middle of that crowd of customers, you just have to keep pushing out dishes as fast as you can.

The game follows a stage-clear format. Complete the orders in front of you, and you move on to the next stage.

If you’re aiming for high scores, though, you’ll need quick hands and a bit of smart planning. There are also some trick-like elements, such as a knife that slices at high speed or a magic potion that can turn into any ingredient.

It also includes an online mode, so you can play cooperatively or competitively. When four chefs are cooking at the same time, things heat up fast.

MengMeng angrily shouts at the wolves not to feed the crying VRPUPU to anyone. GuGu, dressed in a chef outfit, rushes to assemble sandwiches. It’s a cooking game scene where comedy and tension hit at the same time.
