Daytime work can often feel like it has zero accumulation—just fleeting fireworks that fade the second the shift ends. When you are completely detached from the daily grind, sometimes the best remedy is to channel that exhaustion into pure, visceral survival. Zombie Army VR on Meta Quest offers exactly that. Built on the bones of the Sniper Elite franchise, this hardcore WW2 zombie shooter is unapologetically difficult. With incredibly tense manual reloading mechanics, the glorious return of the series’ signature slow-motion X-ray kill cams, and a level of motion sickness that will test your VR legs, it is not for the faint of heart. Here is my honest breakdown of the brutal gunplay, the co-op horde defense, and why there is absolutely no shame in starting on Easy mode.

Game Introduction

World War II scenes are always shown as brutal and blood-soaked in movies, right? What Hitler did was beyond awful, and we’ve all heard about it endlessly in history class.

But did you know he supposedly created a zombie army too? Zombie Hitler has already been taken down, but there are still hordes of zombies crawling everywhere. As the player, you step in as a zombie hunter, with one job only: wipe every last one of them out.

Mengmeng panics and shouts “I’m out of ammo!” while holding an empty gun, GuGu grins and raises a grenade, clutching VRPUPU to his chest, as a massive horde of zombies advances on the military base from behind.

Zombie Army VR is all about one thing: mowing down zombies nonstop.
You use rifles, submachine guns, handguns, even grenades to wipe out entire hordes of zombies charging straight at you.

The story takes place after World War II. And somehow, Hitler had been developing zombies.
Zombie Hitler has already been defeated, but zombies are still spreading across the world.

You play as a member of an elite squad, tasked with hunting down and wiping out every last one of them.

There are three difficulty options.

  • Easy
  • Normal
  • Hard

But be warned. This game is way harder than most VR shooters. Even if you’ve played plenty of VR gunfights before, I honestly recommend starting on Easy. Magazine capacity is extremely limited, so even Normal feels rough for most players. To be blunt, you’ll still struggle quite a bit even on Easy.

Difficulty selection screen offering Easy, Normal, and Hard modes, with skull icons emphasizing the challenge level.

When you choose a character, their appearance affects how your teammates see you in multiplayer.

Character selection screen featuring four protagonists, including male and female characters, allowing players to choose different combat styles.

Once the game starts, you’re taken to a shooting range to learn the basics.

  • Trigger: fine actions like firing, pulling grenade pins, using syringes, and cycling the bolt
  • Grip button: grab weapons, ammo, and other objects
  • A button: open the item bag
  • B button: eject the magazine
  • Left stick: movement (tilt to move, press to sprint)
  • Right stick: turn the camera
  • Menu button: open the menu

Grab the handgun at your waist and try shooting the zombie right in front of you.

The player fires a handgun inside an underground prison, muzzle flash lighting up the shooting range during a training session.

When you run out of ammo, first remove the empty magazine and insert a new one.
After that, you still need to pull the bolt before you can fire again.

Reload tutorial screen where the player swaps magazines with both hands, preparing for the next combat encounter.

Weapons are mounted on different parts of your body.

  • Left shoulder: submachine gun
  • Right shoulder: rifle (sniper rifle)
  • Waist: handgun

If you’re right-handed, it’s best to reach your right hand over to your left shoulder to grab the submachine gun. That way, you can start firing immediately with your dominant hand. The SMG is easier to use with hip fire, and you don’t really need to worry about the scope on top.

The player holds a submachine gun with both hands, showing detailed weapon mechanics while awaiting the next action.

This might be one of the easiest weapons to use early on, but seriously, conserve your ammo. You only get a little over 100 rounds, which is enough to take down maybe 20 zombies at best. That’s not counting those weak, water-gun–level weapons.

The player fires a submachine gun in full auto, bullets raining down on targets ahead, making the training feel like real combat.

Then the commander calls you in and gives you an order. You’re a zombie hunter, right? Go clear out the zombies at the entrance.

Yeah. That’s who you are now. A zombie hunter.

A commanding officer stands in front of a map, briefing the mission objectives.

This is your rifle. It works basically like a sniper rifle. You use the scope to pick off zombies from a distance.

The player picks up a sniper rifle to prepare for combat, with an on-screen prompt saying “Pick up the rifle” and a nighttime military base in the background.

Hold the gun with both hands, look through the scope, and pull the left trigger to activate Focus Mode. That zooms in the reticle and makes it much easier to aim.

A tense sniper view aiming at a zombie’s temple through a cracked scope lens, with a red dot precisely locked on the head.

After every shot, don’t forget to cycle the bolt. This part is critical. You have to work the bolt every single time you fire.

The player operates a rifle with blood-soaked hands as a spent shell ejects from the chamber, preparing to reload for the next attack.

There’s also a really cool moment in this game. When you land a headshot, a slow-motion replay can trigger. You actually see the bullet punch through the zombie’s head, the skull shatter, and blood spray everywhere in full detail.

A bullet strikes a zombie’s skull in slow motion, bones shattering in a dramatic signature headshot sequence.

If you spot one of these crates, don’t ever skip it. Ammo runs out fast in this game, so resupplying is the key to staying alive.

An open ammo crate packed with various ammunition, as the player grabs a yellow magazine to resupply firepower.

Grenades are extremely useful. Pull the pin and toss one into a group of zombies, and it’ll deal massive damage over a wide area. Just be careful not to throw it too close. The blast radius is no joke, and you can easily take yourself out too.

The player grips a homemade grenade while an on-screen guide shows how to pull the pin and throw, set in a weapon tutorial area.

One grenade can blow away three zombies at once.
That said, it’s better to save them. They’re best used when ten or more zombies start swarming you.

A grenade detonates inside a trench, flames erupting as zombies are blasted away, with a kill multiplier displayed on screen.

Melee weapons are extremely helpful in emergencies, but if you use them too much, they’ll break.
So make sure you keep an eye on your weapon’s condition.

The player raises a massive pipe wrench for a melee attack, with a badly injured, blood-covered soldier lying on the ground ahead.

What is this thing, fully geared up or what?
Some zombies are heavily armored, which means they have a lot more HP and burn through your ammo fast.

A few of them even carry guns, but don’t worry. They’ve got zero brain power left, so they can’t actually aim and shoot at you.
That said, accidental shots can still go off, and if you’re unlucky, you might get hit.

The player stabs a zombie with a bayonet at close range as another armed zombie lunges out from a building behind.

Zombies keep coming nonstop, and you never know which direction they’ll come from. Stay alert so you don’t get caught off guard.

Ambushed by a horde of zombies in a narrow alley, the player cuts them down with a bayonet, kill combo indicators highlighting the intense chain of defeats.

If your SMG runs dry, your rifle reload is too slow, or armored enemies block melee hits with their helmets, that’s when your handgun comes in as a backup. When zombies close the distance, don’t hesitate. Put rounds straight into them.

Surrounded by three helmeted zombies at point-blank range, the player desperately fights back with a firearm, creating overwhelming tension and pressure on screen.

Did a zombie swarm take you down and leave you incapacitated? When that happens, pull a medkit out of your backpack and get back on your feet. Pull the pin and jab the needle straight into yourself.

Just remember, the situation around you hasn’t changed. You’re still surrounded, so you’ll have to turn the fight around on your own. If things are truly beyond saving, hold down the Y button to fast-forward the respawn countdown.

The screen shows the player downed with a countdown timer, attempting a rescue with a medic pack, while a “Disabled” warning appears in the center.

If you’re looking for a shooter that actually puts up a real fight, Zombie Army VR is absolutely worth it.
