SUPERHOT VR Meta Quest Review: The Best Zero-Motion Sickness “Matrix” Fantasy

Ever wondered what it actually feels like to be Neo from The Matrix? SUPERHOT VR on Meta Quest turns that cinematic fantasy into a physical reality. With a brilliant twist where time only moves when you do, it delivers high-octane action with zero motion sickness, making it the absolute gold standard for VR beginners. It’s a tactical puzzle-shooter that feels like a deadly, slow-motion dance—and it will have you sweating before you even realize you’re working out. Here is my full breakdown of why this remains a must-play classic and how it manages to be intense without making you dizzy.

Game Introduction

When I was trying to decide which beginner-friendly games to write about, a friend said something that really stuck with me.

“For Meta Quest beginners who want to experience VR-style action without getting sick, I think Superhot is the best choice. Not getting motion sickness basically means no movement, and games without movement are actually very limited. Superhot solves this by having all the enemies come straight at you. It feels less like a shooter and more like a puzzle.”

The moment I heard that, it all clicked.

Wait, isn’t this the exact game my kid played nonstop, headset on, until the battery completely ran out?

GuGu is rocking a black suit, dodging bullets in a subway car like a badass Matrix hero. MengMeng shouts in shock, wondering why none of the shots hit him, while a squad of sunglasses-wearing VRPUPUs surrounds them, guns blazing. The whole scene is both tense and hilarious.

The moment you put on the headset, you’re surrounded by countless monitors and endless streams of code. Your consciousness gets pulled straight into the computer itself, like something out of The Matrix.

Yeah. At that moment, I’m Neo.

The setting itself is what really makes this game interesting. In this world, you’re the creator, with the power to stop time, living by one simple rule: if you don’t move, neither do the enemies.

The moment you move, time starts flowing again. Enemies rush in as a group, throwing punches, firing guns, even tossing grenades straight at you.

They have only one goal: erase the creator.
And I take them down using every method I can think of.

Even as the creator, I’m basically made of paper. One clean hit and it’s game over.
That’s why you’re constantly thinking, dodging, punching, shooting, and sometimes even throwing the gun itself straight into an enemy’s face.

Every new stage cranks the intensity way up.
To avoid attacks and bullets, you twist your body, crouch low, and stay in full motion the whole time. You’re throwing punches nonstop too, but enemies actually block. If you don’t land hits right on the weak points, they won’t go down.

As an entry-level VR game, this one is honestly a perfect fit.
There’s nothing to memorize, no button layouts to learn. The moment you put the headset on, you can start playing.

Your body just moves on its own. That’s the strange magic of Superhot.
Even if it’s your first time in VR, you’ll find yourself completely absorbed, sweating before you realize it, with plenty of intensity to keep things exciting.

The controls are dead simple. You only use your hands and your body.

  • Trigger: fire when you’re holding a gun
  • Grip trigger: grab objects
  • Punch straight out to shatter enemies
  • Grab a bottle and throw it at their face
  • Shift your stance and dodge incoming bullets

Someday, when technology advances enough to send human consciousness directly into a computer world, I imagine it’ll feel a lot like playing SUPERHOT VR.

Being the main character in The Matrix sounds cool…
but man, it’s tougher than it looks.

Game Rating

The Highlights

  • An incredibly immersive experience.
  • Put the headset on and you can jump straight in. No explanations needed.
  • There’s zero motion sickness, which makes it a top pick for VR beginners.
  • It’s exciting without being graphic. There’s no blood, and enemies shatter like glass when defeated, so it even goes over well with kids.
  • A game that works for everyone, across ages and genders.

The Drawbacks

  • Discounts are rare, almost nonexistent.
  • The music, honestly, is just okay.

Setup & Safety

This game is insanely fun, but before you play, make sure to clear the area around you and secure at least one meter of free space. Double-check that there’s no fan, low table, or anything else nearby that you could bump into.

And one more thing… make absolutely sure the cat is out of the room.
If you accidentally step on a tail mid-game and hear a sudden yelp, that’s not something you can laugh off.

Example of a dangerous VR play environment

During VR gameplay, cats and fans are a no-go

A boy wearing a VR headset is playing in his living room, but a cat is near his feet and a fan and furniture are close by, creating a potentially dangerous environment.
