Remember dropping quarters into a Virtua Cop or Time Crisis cabinet at the 90s mall arcade? Crisis VRigade on Meta Quest brings that exact nostalgic light-gun shooter experience into your living room—but this time, you can’t just step on a plastic pedal to take cover. You have to physically squat behind virtual police cars to dodge bullets, turning this retro SWAT shootout into a brutal, sweat-inducing leg workout. With intense manual reloading mechanics and unforgiving difficulty, it is a perfect blend of arcade action and real-world fitness. Here is my full breakdown of the hellish difficulty spikes, the online co-op mode, and why this is the ultimate “squat simulator” for your headset.

Game Introduction

Remember this?

Back when you were a kid, hitting up the mall arcade in the 90s and spotting that Virtua Cop cabinet glowing in the corner. You would drop in a couple of quarters, grab that chunky plastic light gun, and start blasting thugs before they could even raise their weapons. Shoot off-screen to reload, duck behind the cabinet like it actually mattered, and keep the action going nonstop.

The really skilled players would throw in more coins and dual-wield both guns, wiping out every stage like total badasses. And when your pocket money ran out, just standing behind your friends, watching them play and shouting at the screen, was still more than enough fun.

Gugu and Mengmeng stand in front of a bank in special forces gear, holding their guns and staying alert. Mengmeng mutters, “My legs are already killing me…,” while VRPUPU crouches down, sweating nervously. Behind them, armed robbers and hostages create a tense, dangerous scene.

A few years later, something called Crisis Zone showed up with much better graphics. Remember that one? You’d step on the foot pedal to crouch and hide behind cover, then release it to pop back up and fire. By the time we were adults, trips to the arcade got rarer, but thinking back to those days, standing in a crowd behind the cabinet and watching with pure excitement… it still gets your heart racing.

If you want to feel that rush again, that pounding heartbeat from standing in front of the cabinet and unloading on bad guys, Meta Quest’s VR shooter Crisis VRigade is exactly that kind of game.

In the game, you play as a SWAT special forces operator, heading out with your partner Mike to shut down bank robbers who’ve taken over the place.

When you start, you’re dropped straight into a police station. Right in front of you is a shooting range, where you can get a feel for the controls and warm up your aim. After that, you choose the difficulty. Rookie if you’re new and want an easier start, or Hell mode if you’re feeling brave and ready to dive straight into chaos.

My advice is to start on Rookie to get comfortable, then jump into Hell mode once you’ve got the hang of it.

Just like back then, you’ve got three lives. With only a handgun in your hands, you take down wave after wave of enemies as they appear.

But this time, you’re not standing in front of an arcade cabinet. You’re inside the game, trading shots directly with the bad guys. Your gun doesn’t magically reload itself anymore. When you run dry, you have to eject the spent casing, pull out the magazine, grab a fresh one from your chest pouch, load it, and rack the slide before you can fire again.

The old trick of “out of ammo? just shoot off-screen to reload” doesn’t fly anymore.

You drop the magazine with the middle finger button, slot in a new one, rack the slide with a solid clack, and only then can you fire again.

That said, if you reload everything by hand every single time, you’re not going to survive on the battlefield for long. That’s why I recommend opening the settings menu and switching to Auto Reload. With that on, the game reloads for you when you run out of ammo, which makes things a lot more manageable. Until you really get used to the game, this option is much safer.

The battlefield isn’t forgiving. If you don’t take cover, you’ll be full of holes in seconds.

And there’s no foot pedal this time. You have to half-crouch with your own legs, peek out from behind a car at the right moment, pop up, and put a few rounds into the enemy.

Don’t stay crouched the whole time.

Your partner Mike won’t put up with it, and refusing to face the enemy is what cowards do. On top of that, this game has a seriously foul mouth. Crouch too much and you get called a chicken. Miss your shots and it spits “you suck” at you. Take a hit and it goes, “How many lives do you think a human has, huh?”

Yeah, it really doesn’t hold back.

Sometimes special weapons like rifles or dual pistols will drop. When that happens, it’s basically open season. From that point on, you get to beat enemies down however you like.

Oh right, this game also has an online mode, so you can jump in with friends. That said, public matches don’t always fill up. I’ve had times where I waited around ten minutes and nobody showed.

So in practice, it’s best to set things up with friends and play together. Even though the difficulty is high, playing with people you know gets insanely fun and loud fast.

This game is basically nonstop crouch, stand, crouch, stand.

Notice it yet? After just a few rounds, you’ve already done more than enough exercise for the day. At this point, you could honestly call it a fitness game. You’ll be out of breath, and staying hydrated is a must.

It really does feel like a workout game.
You’re not just taking down robbers, you’re shooting down body fat too.

People even joke about calling it a “squat simulator.” Most of the game is spent in a half-crouched stance, sometimes nervously sticking your hands out to fire a few shots. When you play for the first time, don’t go too long. Otherwise, the next day, every time you climb stairs, your thighs are going to be shaking.

Game Rating

The Highlights

  • It feels just like going back to those days, raising a light gun and stylishly mowing down bad guys.
  • The immersion is top-notch. Once you put on the headset, you’re instantly dropped right into the middle of a firefight.
  • You’re shooting and working out at the same time, drenched in sweat, and somehow that just feels insanely good.

The Drawbacks

  • The aiming demands are pretty high, so beginners might end up with some painfully low hit rates at first.
  • Keep crouching and standing over and over, and your legs will start burning fast.
  • And no matter how much money you throw at it, there’s no continuing once you’re out.

Setup & Safety

This game makes you move around a lot, so make sure you clear out a safe play space before jumping in.

Official Description

Crisis VRigade is a high-intensity VR first-person shooter packed with action. You play as a SWAT special forces operator, deploying to deal with various terrorist incidents. You can charge in solo, or open up multiplayer mode and fight shoulder to shoulder with your team.

It’s mission time. You’re thrown straight onto the front lines. It’s dirty and dangerous work, but someone has to do it. Alongside your SWAT team, you move in to secure the area and eliminate the terrorists. The objective is simple. Take out every enemy while keeping your teammates and hostages alive.

Watch your ammo count. When it’s time to reload, make sure you get behind cover. If you don’t, you’ll be torn apart in seconds and the mission is over.

Sometimes you can see the bullets coming. Other times, by the time you realize it, it’s already too late. And if you let a terrorist get away, your teammates might be the ones delivering bad news to your family.

Everyone is counting on your shooting skills. You were the guy who topped the charts at the academy. Now is the time to prove it.

If just shooting enemies in Crisis VRigade isn’t enough for you, try something with even more punch.

For example, there’s SUPERHOT, where you can stop bullets mid-air, or CREED: Rise to Glory, a classic where you settle things with your fists.
