War of Wizards Meta Quest Review: The Ultimate Spell-Casting VR MOBA

Ever watched a fantasy anime or played World of Warcraft and wished you could actually cast spells with your own hands? War of Wizards on Meta Quest turns that exact power fantasy into a highly competitive VR MOBA. Instead of just pressing buttons, you physically draw runes in the air to summon fireballs, giant monsters, and devastating spells to destroy your opponent’s tower. With intuitive controls, intense 1v1 and 2v2 PvP matchmaking, and endless strategic loadouts, it is one of the most addictive magic simulators in VR. Here is my honest review of the spell-casting mechanics, the hectic battlefield chaos, and why you need plenty of physical room to dodge incoming attacks.

Game Introduction

After years of watching Japanese anime, there’s only been one “strongest mage” in my mind.
Pop from Drogon Quest: The Adventure of Dai.

That final scene in the Sky Castle, when he says,
“I am not a Sage…
I am a Grand Sorcerer.
Yeah!
If you’re going to call me anything, call me a Grand Sorcerer!!!”

The moment he said that, it was unreal. Honestly, it hit ten times harder than the hero Dai ever did.

Sometimes I even think Pop was the real main character of that story.
Of course, in the world of Dragon Quest, the hero has to take the spotlight.

Western-style magic worlds feel completely different.

Take World of Warcraft, for example. A mage slows you with Frostbolt, locks you in place with Frost Nova, then turns you into a sheep with Polymorph.

A warlock drags a Voidwalker around and just keeps harassing people nonstop.

Those worlds are loud, chaotic, and honestly kind of messy. But that chaos feels good.

Back when I was deep into World of Warcraft, I used to imagine holding a staff, opening portals, throwing Fireballs without a second thought.

But real life doesn’t work that way.
Magic only exists in novels and games. In the world we actually live in, there’s no way to reach out and touch it.

Still, if you could actually fight with magic, that scene would be exciting without question. And if you could stand shoulder to shoulder with friends and battle together, it would probably feel so good you wouldn’t want to stop.

There’s a game right now that captures that exact fantasy.

Inside, you can fight other players, chat, even throw a little trash talk. The overall atmosphere is surprisingly well done.

War of Wizards doesn’t overwhelm you with complicated controls, and it gives you a wide range of spells to use. There’s also a proper ranked system if you want something competitive.

Honestly, once I finish writing this, I’m probably jumping back in for another match.

In the game, you play as a wizard. You dodge incoming attacks, defend your tower, and look for openings to break through your opponent’s defenses.

A magical battle illustration set under a rain of meteors, with a girl and boy casting spells while the VRPUPU penguin watches from behind in a slightly comedic scene.

As you keep playing, you’ll unlock new spells and get the option to buy more.

So what happens when you start mixing them together?

Honestly, I don’t know.
And you probably don’t either.

That’s the whole point. Just try it in your next match.

When you see this screen, understand one thing.
This is where your life as a wizard really begins.

From here on, you’ll want one more match to test a new combo.
Then another to try a different strategy.
Then one more just to see if that risky play actually works.

Before you realize it, it’s bright outside and you’re checking the clock, wondering how it’s already time for work.

You get hooked. Not in a reluctant way.
You dive in on your own, and you don’t really want out.

Before you jump in, take a minute to run through the tutorial. The controls are way simpler than you’d expect. You’re basically using just a few buttons.

Trigger
Hold it down and move the entire controller to draw a magic circle in the air.
Yeah, actually draw it. It doesn’t have to look pretty. As long as you understand the pattern, the system will recognize it.

Grip Button
Once you finish drawing the spell, press this to activate it.
Whether it goes off cleanly or fizzles out, whether it looks cool or totally awkward, it all comes down to that one press.

A Button
This fires a small spell.
Perfect for chip damage or finishing someone off.
If your opponent is low on HP and trying to run, just tap them once and end it clean.

That’s it. Those are basically the controls.
How simple is it? Honestly, you could hand this to a kid at a family gathering and they’d still manage to look like a decent archmage.

Whether you get hooked on it or not…
Well, that’s a different story.

The tower in front of you shows the spells you currently have equipped.
Just draw the exact shape you see there, and you’re good.

First-person view of the player drawing a red magic circle in midair and casting an attack spell.

When you hold down the Trigger, the path you draw stays visible in the air.
That line becomes the spell you’re about to cast.

A successful spell drawing moment, where a glowing magic circle appears in front of the battlefield and launches an attack.

Once you finish drawing the shape, press the Grip Button to cast the spell. On both sides, you’ll see the strength of the spell you just drew.

Your rank depends on how accurate and how large your drawing is. If your accuracy drops below a C rank, the spell won’t activate at all.

Results screen after casting a spell, showing accuracy and damage evaluation with an S rank rating displayed.

You have two towers: one small tower and one large tower.
If you’ve played MOBA games like League of Legends, you’ll recognize this setup right away.

The small tower automatically attacks any minions that get close. The large tower deals damage too, but once that main tower is destroyed, that player loses the match.

A scene in War of Wizards where multiple summoned units are called onto the battlefield and sent marching toward the enemy base.

Uh oh, the enemy just summoned a Giant. So how do you deal with that?

This is where you either drop a Fireball on it or try a rapid-fire spell to burn it down fast. If you don’t, your minions will get crushed almost instantly.

A massive enemy emerges from a green portal, leading to a battle against a high-durability boss-type foe.

…Wait, did you just get taken out again?

When you go down, there’s a short respawn timer. During that time, you can’t do anything—unless you happen to have a revival-type spell ready to use.

Player death screen with a red defeat indicator and a countdown timer until respawn.

That was a quick win. The game isn’t hard to get into at first, but the more matches you play, the stronger your opponents start to feel.

Matchmaking is rank-based, so while your rank is still low, you won’t be facing top-tier players just yet.

Battle clear screen with “Victory” text and visual effects shown as the win animation.

There are several options in the lobby.
Let’s break down what each one does.

Play
This is standard 1v1. Just you and one opponent.
It’s usually the most active mode, so matchmaking tends to be quick.

2v2
Just like it sounds, you get one teammate.
You’re up against two opponents. If you coordinate over voice chat, you can really control the pace of the match.

Duel Arena
No towers. No crystals. First player to score three knockouts wins.
The distance is close, and there’s only one focus—how you’re going to take the other player down.

PLAY WITH FRIEND
Online matches with friends.
Invite someone you know and test your skills without the pressure of ranked play.

MAGIC SHOP
This is where you buy new spells.
You use tokens earned from matches to expand your spell options.

AVATAR & STAFF
Customize your avatar and magic staff.
It won’t make you stronger, but looking cool still matters.

PRACTICE WITH AI
If you don’t want to get crushed in PvP right away, start here.
It’s a good place to get comfortable with the flow of combat.

War of Wizards main lobby screen with options for solo match, 2v2, friend match, and the magic shop.

When a new match starts, the first thing you see is your opponent’s name. Then the view shifts back to you.

The fight hasn’t even properly begun yet, and they’re already throwing taunts your way.

…Yeah, this one’s not going to be a casual match.

Pre-match preview showing the opposing player’s character and rank information before the battle begins.

Every so often, a bunch of spells drop from the sky.
Use the A Button to fire at those floating spell orbs. If you hit one, it gets collected by your tower and becomes available for you to use.

There’s a limit to how many spells you can carry, though. So don’t just grab everything randomly. Think about what you actually need.
One smart pick can completely turn the match around.

During combat, magic icons drop from the sky and can be selected instantly to activate spells.

Honestly, the new spells that dropped during the Halloween event are straight up scary.

You cast one spell, and four monsters immediately start marching toward your opponent.
You can see them coming from really far away, but somehow it still feels like there is not much you can actually do to stop them.

And their health pools are just stupid.
You keep blasting them, spell after spell, and it feels like they absolutely refuse to go down.

A 2v2 match in War of Wizards, with multiple players and summoned units fighting at the same time in a chaotic battlefield.

This is hands down my favorite spell in the game. It is called God’s Wrath.

The moment you cast it, you turn into this massive giant, gripping a huge battle axe, and you just start swinging straight at your enemies. They basically have no real way to fight back.

When that hit lands, it does not just feel powerful.
It feels unfair, in the best possible way.

A magical effect where you summon a cute pink dragon that attacks enemies from long range.

Look at my axe.
You two are nothing but lambs waiting for the slaughter.

And yeah, you are about to die by my blade.

The summoned dragon flies across the battlefield, dealing continuous damage to enemy units from above.

The battlefield is pure chaos.

Halloween monsters are charging straight at me, but at the same time my teammate on the other lane looks like they are about to fall apart.

So who do you save first?

That split-second call can straight up decide how the entire match is going to end.

A red meteor-type spell falls from the sky, and players attempt to block or spread out to reduce the heavy incoming damage.

We won.

After the match, the game throws all the stats at you.
And sometimes you realize that having a crazy kill count does not actually mean you played better.

The real winner is the one who controlled the flow of the game.

Post-match results screen displaying total defeats, accuracy rate, rank evaluation, and gold earned.

How about a magic duel with me?

Just saying up front, I am actually pretty strong.

Game Rating

The Highlights

  • The ranking system does a solid job of matching you with players around your skill level, so most of your fights feel fair.
  • There’s a wide variety of spells, and the way you build your loadout and move around completely changes how the game plays. That’s why it stays fresh even after a lot of matches.
  • The controls are genuinely simple. You’re only using a few buttons, so it feels natural pretty quickly.
  • It’s also a popular title, which means there are plenty of players online. You won’t be sitting around waiting for matches.

The Drawbacks

  • Your play space really affects the experience. If the area is tight, movement feels restricted and it gets frustrating fast.
  • There are also some players with pretty bad manners. Every now and then you’ll run into someone who just gets under your skin.
  • In 2v2 mode, the skill gap between teammates can be big. When that happens, you sometimes end up carrying the match on your own.

Setup & Safety

When you’re dodging attacks, you need to move side to side.

If you don’t have enough room to do that, the whole experience just doesn’t feel as good.

Final Score & Comfort Level

Official Description

A Unique VR MOBA Experience

War of Wizards blends a rune-drawing spell system with tower defense mechanics, creating a MOBA experience that really only works in VR. It’s not something you’ll find anywhere else, and that’s part of what makes it stand out.

Draw Runes to Cast Spells

In War of Wizards, the strength of your magic depends on how you use it. The system recognizes the rune you draw and instantly triggers the corresponding spell.

There’s also a skill book guide in-game, so you don’t have to memorize every rune pattern. That lets you focus on positioning and timing instead of worrying about recalling shapes mid-fight.

Intense Magic Battles with Strategic PVP and PVE

As a wizard, every move matters. Each spell you cast can shift the flow of the match.

You can jump into real-time 1v1 or 2v2 PVP against other players, or test your skills in PVE mode against AI opponents.

In PVP, you’re automatically matched with online players and teammates, so every match feels fresh and carries real tension.

You build your spell loadout, adapt to how the battlefield changes, and drop the right spell at the right moment. When it all clicks and you lead your team to victory, that feeling sticks with you.

High-level magic cast during a War of Wizards battle, creating a massive energy vortex in the sky as a beam of light strikes the central castle from the clouds.

Main Features:

  • Tower defense style gameplay that really pushes your decision-making, strategy building, time management, and even how well you coordinate with teammates.
  • You draw runes to cast spells, and which spell comes out depends on how you draw it.
  • The size and accuracy of your rune directly affect the power of the skill.
  • Spell combinations are well balanced, so you can experiment with different builds and playstyles.
  • Both PVP and PVE modes are available. 1v1 and 2v2 use matchmaking, so you can jump into a match quickly.
  • You can play against strangers, friends, or AI opponents.

Even if the magic in War of Wizards doesn’t quite click for you, there are still plenty of other competitive games here worth trying.
