Ever wonder what happens when you combine the quirky charm of Animal Crossing with the absolute chaos of a high school marching band? Trombone Champ: Unflattened isn’t just a rhythm game; it’s a hilariously realistic simulation of the “extendable trumpet.” Whether you are a brass band veteran reliving your youth with The Stars and Stripes Forever or a VR beginner looking for a zero-motion-sickness title that will make you cry from laughter, this Quest reimagining is a masterpiece of absurd musicality. Here is my full breakdown of the realistic slide mechanics, the steep learning curve, and why this “BWAAP”-filled adventure is a must-play.

Game Introduction

Is this really not a Nintendo game?

The moment it boots up, every character just radiates that unmistakable Nintendo vibe. It feels like a full cast of Miis showed up, and the overall atmosphere is basically Animal Crossing—except this is a Meta Quest VR rhythm game.

Story? Uh… none.
It’s a simple rhythm game, and I’m a trombone player. I used to play trumpet when I was younger, but I’ve messed around with trombone a few times too. It’s a low-brass instrument, and in Taiwanese marching bands it’s sometimes called the “extendable trumpet.” There’s a reason trombone players line up at the very front in marching formations—so you don’t accidentally shove your slide into the guy’s butt in front of you.

With a trombone, you control pitch by extending and retracting the slide, combined with breath control. And somehow, someone decided to turn that entire concept into a game. Honestly, whoever made this is a genius.

The game starts with a short tutorial. First, you pick your dominant hand. Extend the slide for lower notes, pull it in for higher ones. Hold the trombone with the ring finger button, then use the A button or the trigger to blow. Once you get the basics down, you’re up on stage, performing in front of a clapping audience.

The developer absolutely has a band background. No question.

The very first song you play is basically a warm-up exercise straight out of brass practice. The first one or two stages are slow, ballad-like pieces meant for beginners, giving you time to learn the controls and slide technique properly.

Then stage three hits, and everything ramps up fast.

The moment Washington Post March and The Stars and Stripes Forever kick in, the memories come flooding back. That familiar march, wildly out-of-tune brass sounds, and the audience’s visibly exhausted expressions—it’s exactly what we were like back in the day. Even when the in-game crowd is covering their ears and shaking their heads, once I took the headset off, my eyes were actually a little wet.

That’s the magic here.
This isn’t just game music. It’s a moment where your youth comes back to life inside a game.

Gugu in a sailor outfit happily playing the trombone, while Mengmeng covers her ears and yells “Stop playing already!” VRPUPU sits on a warship deck with an exasperated look, creating a hilarious scene of chaotic slide sounds.

That said, the controls in this game are anything but easy.
Managing the trombone slide, controlling pitch, pulling off glissandos—every part of it is tougher than it looks. If you’re aiming for high scores, be ready to put in some serious practice.

A performance scene showing the challenging control of trombone slides and pitch, where a rhythm game turns into serious brass practice and high scores require intense repetition.

To move forward, you have to clear a certain number of songs before the next area unlocks. Until you really get used to it, the difficulty curve is pretty steep. Around stage three, getting high scores suddenly becomes a lot harder. That said, no matter how off your pitch is, the game always lets you finish the song all the way to the end.

If you’ve ever been in a brass band, this game is almost guaranteed to hook you. You’ll feel that urge to nail those famous marches perfectly… but the difficulty is just as unforgiving as playing them in real life. It’s practice, practice, and then more practice.

Honestly, it feels like being thrown right back to those days when I was young, standing next to my seniors and blasting out The Thunder God March together.
